Jennifer Thomsen
MAPC- Masters Pastoral Counselor
Hi, my name is Jennifer Thomsen; I am a pastoral counselor specializing in crisis response and trauma. I recently graduated from Liberty University with a Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling (2024). I also have a Bachelor of Liberal Arts with an emphasis in humanities and social sciences from the University of Alaska Southeast (2008). I retired from the State of Alaska Department of Corrections (2022) after service of twenty-one-plus years, and before my state career, I served in the United States Air Force for over five years. I furthered my education with two graduate certificate programs from Liberty University in Military Resilience (Fall 2024) and Addiction Studies (Spring 2025). In furthering my spiritual studies, I am pursuing my credentials as a pastor through my local church. After retirement, I began my journey to become equipped with the proper tools to help people who have experienced trauma, loss, and abuse from a holistic perspective that involves caring for clients’ physical, emotional, behavioral, and spiritual needs. As a pastoral counselor, I actively strive to combine and apply my education with my lay experience, thus transforming it into a compassionate professional experience by walking alongside clients in their time of need and being a positive presence in their lives. As I work toward full licensure, I am under the supervision of a Debbie Hamilton, MA LPCS here at New Hope Counseling Center.

Gary Hondel
MA, Othmer Method Neurofeedback Certified
Hello, my name is Gary Hondel and I was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I relocated to Alaska in 1992 where, other than four years in Florida and five months in Arizona, I have been a resident of the state. Before 2020, I had spent the majority of my time in the local radio broadcasting industry (where I still dabble in it a little). While doing this, I earned a BA in Psychology in 2003 from the University of Alaska Anchorage and went on to obtain an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2022 from Liberty University in Virginia. In fall of 2021 and spring of 2022, I completed my master’s practicum and a portion of my internship here at New Hope Counseling Center and completed it at Granite Mountain Behavioral Healthcare in Prescott Valley, Arizona. I have recently completed the required hours for my Alaska counseling license and am awaiting the final processing of my application for my state counseling license. I work under the supervision of Debbie Hamilton, MA LPCS. In addition, I am currently enrolled in the Clinical Doctor of Behavioral Health program through Arizona State University which I will complete in December 2026. I am married with two daughters, not to mention living in a house full of pets! My interests include art, guitar, travel, Glen Campbell, and the Beatles. My professional training and experience include addictions, anxiety, depression, panic disorder, autism spectrum disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), diabetes, couples counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and neurofeedback.
Our Story
New Hope and the Alaska Christian College

New Hope Counseling Center was founded in 2003 to provide counseling services to students at Alaska Christian College, which serves a predominantly Alaska Native population ages 18–22, many from backgrounds where alcoholism and abuse were common. Counseling was built into every student's tuition package to support healing and restoration. In 2006, New Hope expanded beyond the college to serve the greater Kenai Peninsula, offering faith-based counseling to individuals, couples, and families from Seldovia to Cooper Landing and into rural Alaska. Since then, the center has grown from one Licensed Professional Counselor and two biblical mentors to four Licensed Professional Counselors — walking alongside people on their healing journey, with the hope that all who come find peace.
Faith Based
Integrating Faith with Professional Counseling Techniques
New Hope Counseling Center offers an alternative to traditional counseling by blending the effective tools, techniques, and research of traditional counseling with the sound truth and hope of the Bible. Our counselors are Master’s level, licensed professional counselors. It is our desire to partner with local churches, to facilitate mental, emotional and spiritual health within the community. When issues arise that are beyond the counseling training of local churches, we offer ourselves as a referral source in order to further meet the needs of the individual, couples or families. We also desire to partner with families and businesses and as Licensed Professional Counselors, we respect the individual beliefs of all people and offer both traditional and faith-based counseling for the people we serve.

NeuroFeedback
Licensed Professional
Neurofeedback is the direct training of brain function, through which the brain learns to function better and more efficiently. We can now augment that process by allowing the brain to see itself in action from moment to moment through its own brainwave activity, the EEG. The brain effectively gets to watch its own dance of self-regulation in real time. This suffices to allow the brain to improve its self-regulatory competence. This is a gradual learning process. We refer to this kind of neurofeedback process as Endogenous Neuromodulation.
Telehealth Appointments
Virtual Counseling Available
Tele-behavioral Health involves the use of secure electronic communications to enable therapists to provide services to individuals who would otherwise not have adequate access to care. Tele-behavioral Health may be used for services such as individuals, couples, or family therapy, follow ups, and training/education in a group setting.
Alaska Christian College (ACC)
Free Counseling to ACC Students
It is the desire of Alaska Christian College to offer counseling services to each student to facilitate healing and restoration. Thankfully due to the partnership and history of ACC and New Hope every student that attends the college receives access to counseling services as part of their tuition package.
